What is the Cuntas Míosúil?
The Cuntas Míosúil is the monthly progress record every Irish primary teacher keeps. At the end of each month you write up what was actually taught in each curriculum area, hand it to the principal, and it stays in the school as the official record of your class's learning. Inspectors read it during incidental visits and whole-school evaluations, and a substitute or a new teacher relies on it to see where the class has got to.
What goes into it
There is no single prescribed national template. The format is agreed at whole-school level, and in practice it takes one of two shapes. In many schools, teachers tick and annotate their short-term plans (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) as the month goes on and hand that in as the Cuntas Míosúil. In others, it is a separate document, written subject by subject and organised by strand and learning outcome, in enough detail that someone who wasn't in the room can follow the month's work. Either way it sits alongside your long-term and short-term preparation as the third piece of the record, and most teachers still write it from memory, a diary and the plans, usually in one long evening.
The problem with writing it at month end
Recent guidance on preparation for learning, teaching and assessment has aimed to reduce the paperwork burden, and the plan becoming the record is the spirit of it. The time still goes when a month is reconstructed in one sitting. You planned the work weeks ago, taught a version of it that changed along the way, and now have to remember which learning outcomes were actually covered, which topics ran over, and what got skipped for the school tour. The record ends up describing the plan rather than the teaching.

Teachers are required to keep planning documentation and a monthly progress record, and schools retain the Cuntas Míosúil for inspection. Your school sets the exact format and how it is submitted.
Who reads it?
Your principal receives it at the end of each month, and inspectors may review it during a visit. It is also the handover document a substitute teacher works from.
