Planning for the new Primary Curriculum Framework
The new Primary Curriculum Framework restructures the primary curriculum around learning outcomes, grouped into curriculum areas and taught across four stages. Schools are introducing the new curriculum areas on a phased basis from September 2026, beginning with at least one area chosen by the school, with professional learning days supporting the change. English and Gaeilge continue on the Primary Language Curriculum and Maths on the Primary Mathematics Curriculum, both already written in learning outcomes, and other areas may carry on with existing planning while the phase-in runs. So for most teachers the next while is a mix: a new specification in one area, familiar practice in the rest.
What changes for planning
Planning from learning outcomes is a different habit: instead of paging through subject documents, you work from what children should be able to do by the end of a stage, and choose content and activities that serve those outcomes. If you already plan language and maths from outcomes, the habit is familiar and the new areas extend it. The work is in the cross-referencing: finding the right outcomes for your class level and sequencing them into a fortnight or a month, one area at a time, is where the evenings go.
A sane way in
Start from your timetable, not the framework. Decide when each subject happens in your week, then attach outcomes to those slots a fortnight or a month at a time. You don't need to master every specification in September; you need next fortnight planned, recorded, and feeding an honest Cuntas Míosúil.
