Fortnightly plans for primary school
The fortnightly plan is the most common form of short-term plan in Irish primary schools; some schools ask for weekly or monthly plans instead, and the structure is the same. It sets out what you intend to teach across each subject for the next two weeks: the strands, the learning outcomes, the activities, and how you'll differentiate. Most schools ask for it in advance, and it is the document your Cuntas Míosúil should later be able to answer to.
Why it takes so long
The slow part is not deciding what to teach. It is the cross-referencing: finding the right learning outcomes for each subject and class level, copying them into your format, sequencing topics sensibly, and doing it again in a fortnight, roughly twenty times a year. For multigrade classes, that work doubles or trebles.
What a good fortnight looks like
Continuity beats novelty. Each subject picks up where the last fortnight finished, outcomes recur across weeks rather than being ticked once, and the plan leaves room to run over. A plan you actually follow, and can annotate as you go, is worth more than an elaborate one that gets abandoned by Wednesday of week one.

Do I have to follow the plan exactly?
